Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej [now Onesti(born November 12, 1961 in Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej, now One Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast in history to get a flawless score of 10 in an Olympic competition. Bela Karrolyi was a Romanian gymnastics instructor, who later became Comaneci's coach and first became aware of Comaneci when she was just six years old. She first competed at the championships for juniors from Romania in 1969 she placed 13th. And in 1970, the Romanian gymnast won. She won three golds in her very first contest, a junior pre-Olympic meet in 1972, which was a communist bloc countries. The following year, 1973 as well as 1974 she won the junior all-round champion. Her debut as a Senior in 1975, she beat Russian Lyudmila Turkishcheva. The five-time European champ winning four gold medals and one silver. She took home the American Cup in New York City in 1976 and became the first female to do a backward double salto as an unmounting from uneven bars parallel to each other. She started her career performing figure skating with Nina Wayne, her younger sister in one of the touring entertainment shows Ice Capades. They featured staged ice skating shows.
