Her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts, a farmer, was the first Roberts to arrive in Atlanta. She inherited her father's interest in the theater at an early childhood. When he was a student at Emory University in 1952 he performed in shows on campus and elsewhere in Atlanta. While stationed in Biloxi in Mississippi, he was played as a soldier in a production with Betty Lou Bredemus. The couple married in 1955 and their first child Eric Anthony was born in 1956. In 1957 the couple left the air force and Walter was enrolled at Tulane University in New Orleans Louisiana. Walter began working for Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio in 1960. In 1964, Walter and Betty Lou began production on an on-sunday morning local children's television program called Bum Bum and His Buddies which they funded by themselves. They created an Actors and Writers Workshop in the same year. The workshop took six years to complete. In 1965, they welcomed two new children: Lelisa Billingsley and Julia Billingsley.
